Maybe it’s me, but this has just never sounded correct to me.
I was reading a headline that reads:
Car mows down pedestrians on Las Vegas Strip, killing 1 and injuring dozens more
Is a car capable of mowing anyone down or is it the driver that drove said car?
Should the headline read:
Driver mows down pedestrians on Las Vegas Strip, killing 1 and injuring dozens more.
-or-
Driver of car mows down pedestrians on Las Vegas Strip, killing 1 and injuring dozens more.
I have yet to grasp how an inanimate can perform an action. Even a lawnmower cannot perform its specified function without the aid of an animate object.
So, I’m slightly perplexed. I would greatly appreciate if there is anyone who is able to clear this up for me.
Thanks bunches
Humans have a tendency to lay blame on anything other than themselves. It helps when the blamed one is inanimate and cannot defend itself. 🙂
