Weekend Coffee Share

If We Were Having Coffee. . .

I’d start off with the good things that happened over the last two weeks. As you know I started tutoring and she’s definitely precocious. She has me wondering if I was that way when I was 9.

Last week I discovered that although Deja reads well, she needs to work on her reading comprehension. I revisited the subject of the teacher not giving the definition of the spelling words and she again told me the teacher didn’t tell them what the words mean, which I think is wrong on so many levels. So, I challenged her to look up their meanings and explained that it would help when she had put them in sentences.

I’m getting a bit of an ego boost from a 9-year-old. When we were leaving the tutoring site, she took my arm and told me that I was the best tutor she’s ever had. Holla! 🙋😊

If We Were Having Coffee. . .

A coworker and I were talking about my tutoring and he was asking about the program and how he could get his daughter into it. I told him who the tutoring was through and to check out how and if he can get his daughter enrolled.

He told me that he and his wife were looking for tutors to help his daughter with her reading, but everyone they’ve found thus far is too pricy for them. He asked if I would consider tutoring her two or three nights a week, and before I knew it I said sure. We haven’t worked out the details yet (i.e. payment). And of course he has to get approval from the wife.

I’d tell you that last week my workplace drama escalated to a level I can’t even begin to describe. But there was a silver lining. I’ll be brief.

On Wednesday, I was told by the office administrator that I would probably have to move to another area because a conversation she had with my coworker Tuesday evening left her concerned for my physical well-being.

Umm. Excuse me? WTF?!?!

Thank goodness my employer took what she said to heart and terminated her on Wednesay.

I was shuttled into the office again on Thursday, and told that there is still concern for my safety. What the frickity frack? Apparently there were threats made against my person. By gad! I can’t catch a break. I was told to be hyper vigilant and watch my surroundings and if I saw her that I needed to report it.

So far so good. It’s been a week and I haven’t seen her, but it’s still too soon to let my guard down. Hopefully they were just empty threats.

I’d tell you that National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) is right around the corner and I’m taking up the challenge. I’m getting my topics ready and doing some prewriting. I also signed up for Rarasuar NanoPoblano. If you’re not familiar with NaBloPoMo or NanoPoblano Rara has an excellent post here and if you  want to sign up to be a Pepper, you can do that here.

I would say Happy Halloween and having said that check out this video. This guy is from my hometown and he’s been doing a Halloween light show for several years now to raise money for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center (JHCC). You can check out Edward’s Landing Lights here and if you can make a donation to the JHCC.

  1. Be careful sweetie! Glad they let that woman go, but threats are so awful. Hopefully they are empty threats. Just be vigilant. The girl you are tutoring sounds adorable. I am happy, that she took to you so well. That takes talent. Have a wonderful week!

    • Thanks Claudia, I really do hope they were empty threats. She left her mark and folks are being hypervigilent. I don’t know what it is about kids, but they seem to take to me like a moth to a flame. It’s great, especially when you can help them achieve their goals.

  2. What a week! Sorry to hear you’ve had that sort of a disastrous situation with a co-worker—what a mess! Thankfully she’s now a former co-worker, I suppose!

Good luck with the tutoring. It can be really rewarding. 🙂

  3. I didn’t give out definitions for my spelling words. It was part of the assignment that they look up the words and use them appropriately in sentences. You might check to see if that’s the case. She might not have time to look them up at school and perhaps doesn’t have access to a dictionary at home? I would check on that.

I’m glad your employer got rid of the coworker. It sounds like she is mentally unstable. You don’t need that! I hope they were hollow threats and that she gets some help.

    • Interesting Corina, when I was in school when we got our spelling words we were either given the definitions or given time to define them. I know she has a laptop she uses for some school work, so she could look them up that way. Anyway, I’ll probably revisit it with her mother because we know how kids are. They conveniently forget.

  4. That is just so odd about the ex-coworker. What could a coworker do that is so bad you’d want to hurt them? I mean, there have been people I didn’t like to work with, but I didn’t think the answer was to try to take them out! Anyway, very cool about the tutoring!

    • Trent, we (the folks at work) have been asking ourselves that question. I was told to go home before they fired her because HR was afraid she would try something if I was still there. When I was shuttled into the office the next day I was told that she said we better be glad she’s not the type of person to bring a gun to work. Needless to say the office has pretty much chalked her up to being mentally unstable.

I don’t think I’ve ever thought about taking someone I didn’t like out either and if I did I definitely didn’t say out loud. And if they ticked me off that much, I made a date with a punching bag, elliptical, treadmill, something to work it out.

I’m having a blast tutoring. I really enjoy seeing people learn and if gives me a sense of accomplishment knowing that I had something to do with it.

      • That is just so odd. Yeah, sounds like she’s mentally unstable. On a totally unrelated subject, did you make it to the mountains to see the aspen leaves changing? I’ve never been in CO in the autumn, but I’ve heard it’s pretty.

      • No, I haven’t. It’s almost a 4 hour drive, so it’s something I would have to make a weekend of. I was told that there is a drive that’s a bit closer and really pretty, but I forgot. I’ll have to find out. The leaves are starting to change and you can see it a little bit on the mountains. I have a day off coming up so maybe I will make the drive. If I do I’ll be sure to take plenty of pics.

  5. I would love to join you in Nano Poblano, but maybe not this year. : ) Still it sounds fun, and like it would be a great way to meet some new blogger friends. Thanks for sharing the light show video today, it’s amazing!

  6. Wow, you must have really ticked some people off! I’m so glad I work for myself and surround myself with kids all day! I have always thought it would be fun to be a tutor. Too bad I was too lazy to get the proper education! lol

    • LOL! I do have a way with people. It’s just weird. I have never had anything like this happen to me before. It’s scary, especially when you don’t know what you’ve done or said to that person to warrant the behavior.

Tutoring is great! I think teaching is in my blood. My mom was at university, my dad teaches new ministers, my sister went to school for education, a couple of cousins, etc. It’s gotta be hereditary.
